FILM REVIEW: RED (12A)

SLIDER’S REVIEW:

AH! *sigh* getting old sucks doesn’t it, just because one is RETIRED doesn’t mean your still not EXTREMELY DANGEROUS.
(oh but that’s if you used to be a top CIA Agent)

RED is about some CIA agents who used to be the best in their days. Now they are OAP’s living in retirement homes or alone by themseleves. A hit list is made and they have become prime targets. To stay alive they form a team together to find out whos after them.

This is one badass action comedy movie. Who wouldn’t have fun watching these great actors with guns (lots of it), car chases, great banter, funny lines & great locations. The storyline doesn’t dissapoint because even though a heap of people are killed theres still a lightness and it doesn’t get in too heavy. This movie works well also because all the actors/actress are funny enough OLD in real life. Willis is 55, Freeman is 73, Malkovich is 56 & Mirren is 65.

Director Robert Schwentke manages to tell this story as well as he could. All the main characters are used properly and have a likeness to them. This is why people should go cinema, for good movies like this. Even though the film does go on for a best part of 2 hours Its worth it as I found it trully entertaining. From the moment the Frank Moses character gets attacked in his kitchen. I was drawn in till it finished. Very fun to watch.

Who says old people cant be cool?. The characters are as good as it could get, with a line up cast of Bruce Willis who plays the lead role as (Frank Moses)a black ops CIA agent. If you ever wondered what a CIA agent would be like in real life then his character defines it. calm cool but very dangerous. Morgan freeman is another retired agent (Joe Matheson) who joins up with moses to take down the people trying to kill them. My favourite character would have to be John Malkovich, he plays this paraniod character (Marvin Boggs) whos just naturally funny with his lines and his suspicious nature. His “Old Man My A**” scene was super cool and a joy to watch. Helen Mirren plays an ex agent also. She the only woman In the group but that doesnt stop her shooting big guns with pure authority. She’s one firece bad b****. Great actress also

I cant even think of a negative except for Bruce Willis’s police car stunt. Visually it looks great but theroretically its impossible. The car is is being spun after been crashed into. He then manages to open the door and step out like he the car wasn’t moving at all and then start shooting at the same time... Really? (you have to see it to understand my rant)

MY STAR RATINGS OUT OF 5: 4.5

ONE FAVOURITE MOMENT IN THE FILM:

The kitchen fight scene with Frank Moses (Bruce Willis). He beats up some black ops in his hallway who have come to kill him. Then he puts a pan on the stove and puts bullets on it. He leaves the kitchen and heads underground. The bullets get red hot and they start to fire off on their own In the kitchen. The rest of the black ops team outside shoot down the house thinking their men inside are in need of help. They then come inside the house to check on the carnage and Frank Moses kills them all.

FILM REVIEW: DESPICABLE ME (U)

SLIDER’S REVIEW:

WHAT A MINION SIZED FAMILY FUN MOVIE THIS IS.

Kids will love it in laughter and so will the adults. Despicable Me is about a supervillain called Gru who adopts three orphan girls inorder to use them as bait for his dirty work. As he gets close to the girls he realises that he likes himself as a father figure.

This computer animation 3D film Directed by Pierre Coffin & Chris Renaud is a good enough excuse to go to the cinema. The characters are very entertaining and the use of 3D hasn’t been this effective since Avatar. Just the having the Minions on screen messing around & hitting eachother was hilarious.

The storyline sends a message to hold on to the most important things in life, I like the message because its light & heartwarming and doesn’t spoil the cuteness of the movie. Steve Carell’ is just a natural at these sorts of movies, his voice was made for the animation scene and he’s just a funny man. Jason Segel (Marshall from E4’s How I Met Your Mother) is in this movie playing Gru's arch enemy Vector. His character was very well played.

#Dont be surprised if the kids want to see this more than once.

MOVIE REVIEW: THE TOWN (15)

SLIDER’S REVIEW:

I really enjoyed watching this film.

This film is about the most robbery prone town in america. A place called Charlestown. I knew to expect guns, masked men and get away vans and that’s exactly what I got. What I liked about this crime drama film was that It told a good story and nothing was too over the top.

At first I didn’t think I was going to get anything out of this film. I had seen lot of bank robberies In films before so it didn’t think it would be anything different. But It was how the drama and romance build up pans out that drew me in, everyones acting skills gave the storyline the edge it needed. The action sequences blended in perfectly, I loved the visuals of the bank robbers dressed as nuns.

My hat goes off to Ben Affleck because he kill two birds with one stone. He pulls off such a gripping performance as lead role and then as the credits roll at the end you read that he also directs this movie. If theres any doubt on his comback to the game then this film should put any mind at ease. The rest of the cast do a superb job especially a hot headed Jeremy Renner, he plays Jem Coughlin and a cute Rebecca Hall who plays Claire Keesey. There’s also the sexy Blake Lively who plays Krista Coughlin, her acting really shows her in a great light. She can thank her Gossip Girl days.

The Town is a great success in terms of story & screenplay. #A must watch.

MOVIE REVIEW: THE SOCIAL NETWORK (12A)

SLIDER’S REVIEW:

Are you on Facebook?
Do you want to know who and how it was created?
If your answer is YES for both of them questions then watch this movie.

The Social Network is an American drama film about how one genius idea that made Mark Zuckerberg (founder of Facebook) one of the youngest billionaires in history. The story centres Jessie Eissenberg who plays Mark on how the Facebook was developed and how’s idea it was in the first place. Throughout the film the story of how it all came together is told piece by piece because Mark is being sued by his friends as they claim Facebook was their idea. Where there’s millions of dollars in questions, everyone’s staking a claim.

This film is another one of those “does exactly what it says on the tin”. I knew what the film was about so the story telling and acting had to be top notch or the movie would collapse. I mean if I wanted to know about the Facebook founders I could have just easily bought the book from Ben Mezrich called The Accidental Billionaire.

I am 100% happy to say that this film pulls out more stops than a London Bus. The story is so fresh that it grabbed me from the first scene through to the end. Director David Fincher has done another outstanding job, his signature moves are written all over the way this film is shot. The camera works, lighting and emotional build up between Zach and Eduardo add to coolness of this film. I knew to expect great visuals from this man, he was the one behind the 1995 Seven & the 1999 classic Fight Club. I won’t be surprised if this film’s cast & crew collect a few awards.

I don’t see Jesse Eisenberg on the big screen a lot of times which is a shame because his acting abilities are excellent. His role in this film was chosen perfectly and it suited him. He’s one of the main reasons this movie came out the way it did. Andrew Garfield who plays his friend also does a superb job as Eduardo Saverin. I wasn’t sure on how good Justin Timberlake acting skills was but in his role as Sean Parker he was a very good actor. He is probably the first person from the music business that I have watched in a film and have forgotten that he’s an artist and only saw him as the person he portrayed on screen.

#Fact: Andrew Garfield has been chosen to play the new peter parker in the new Spider-Man film out 2012
MY STAR RATINGS OUT OF 5: 4

MOVIE REVIEW: WALL STREET 2: MONEY NEVER SLEEPS (12A)

SLIDER’S REVIEW:

I actually didn’t know what to expect when I went to see this film. I had never seen the first one and all I knew is that it was about money.

This is a film Directed by Oliver stone and is said to be his best work yet, Well with a 70 million dollar budget and a great cast it had to be right?. Well sadly its another dissapointing attempt in film making. i didn’t get enough about greed, power and how wall street worked instead I was watching how human emotions work through different types of relationships… (boring, yea I know)

The storyline to this American Drama is not original enough for it to be a master piece. Theres too much time spent focusing on whats been and not what is happening. At about half an hour to the end I was feeling like I had already seen the ending because it was that predictable. If the ending had a twist that even I couldn’t have predicted then maybe I could have put my stamp of approval on this film. Im surprised I was able to stay through the whole movie.

Wall Street 2’s saving grace was the actors. Shia LaBeouf’s performance was simply outstanding. He is such a talented actor, he really took this role in his stride without a blip. Michael Douglas’s performace also was very well perfromed. I can see why he got a Academy Award for Best Leading Actor in the first Wall Street in 1988. These two actors on screen chemisty worked to perfection as Shia looked like the eager rookie looking to work and learn from the best and Mr. Douglas (whilst puffing on a cuban cigar) was looking like the boss who’s done it all .

#Sadly, I didn’t get anything out of this film apart from genuinely good actors.

MY STAR RATINGS OUT OF 5: 2.5
