MOVIE REVIEW: KARATE KID (2010 REMAKE) (PG)

SLIDERS REVIEW:

Without even watching this remake I knew what the purpose of this film was. Most of us know what the first karate kid movie was all about so I pretty much knew the outcome. This was a way of exposing the main character Jaden Smith to the world. His dad Will Smith put this project together with his wife because they believe their son has a talent for acting and the big screen just like them. In the pursuit of happiness Jaden’s performance was amazing for a first timer but then again his future was bright anyway, I mean he is the son of Will Smith.

I have been excited about this film from the moment I saw the trailer. So I was excited watching it and was not disappointed. Jaden Smith who plays Dre Parker does do his best with the acting but I feel he couldn’t really handle the emotional scenes. His character is believable which is always key to any character in any film, this makes it heart warming to see him go from just a boy from America to this kung fu fighter in china. Just by watching Jaden Smith act I can see his dad in him. It’s the way he talks and his facial expressions. His dad’s swagger has definitely rubbed off on him.

Surprisingly “Mr Han” who is played by Jackie Chan pulls off an amazing performance in the film simply because his character is not the usual of Jackie Chan. He took a new approach in this one and could land him a Oscar nomination. I believe he is good for it. China made sure to expose itself in this film to the rest of the world because the wide, medium and long shots of the country landmarks are just simply beautiful to look at. Some people will finish watching this film and think they are kung fu fighter because they can put on and put off their jacket just like Jaden Smith does in this movie. LOL

MY STAR RATINGS OUT OF 5:   4++++

ONE FAVOURITE MOMENT IN THE FILM:

Mr Hans first fight scene will have to be my favourite in this movie because he was able to fight these young kids without hitting them. He makes them hit each other rather than him hitting them.
The visuals in this fight are exciting to say the least.

(If you loved another moment in the film, please feel free to tell me in the comments)

SYNOPSIS:

The plot is about a 12-year-old boy from Detroit who moves to China with his mother and just like any school he runs into bullies who make him feel less than wanted. He meets an old maintenance man, Mr Han who is a kung fu master. He trains him in kung fu for self defence and for a competition where he will meet his nemesis.

I personally thought the film was amazing.. Two great actors who pulled off their roles perfectly. Using the original concept of 'Karate Kid', but updating the key features. It worked so well (especially since Kung Fu is 100x more interesting than Karate lol)..
The only downfall that I can pinpoint, is the fact it took long to get to the initial story.. But once it kicked in, I was glued to the screen.
Easily a 9/10 rating for this film.

  4. The Karate Kid is fun, and believable. Abit of action, not 2 much. I would reccommend it people aged 4-30 old people wont like it I think. It could have been better, the story line was predictable. ill give it a 8/10
